Do you remember the first day when you decided to begin your weight loss journey?
I don’t remember the exact date of the beginning of my weight loss journey, but it started back in 2015. I had a very specific experience that made me start my journey and it all originated from the fact that I always have loved riding my motorcycle. But one day my diabetes had gotten out of control and my doctor ordered me to no longer ride on my motorcycle alone for my safety and of others. That one thing I enjoyed, I could no longer enjoy.
About a year later, I remember riding on the back of a motorcycle and a car next to us came up on our side and kept the speed. The car was filled with young adults who were mocking me and shouting insults. Even though we changed lanes, they followed us and continued. I was so humiliated and embarrassed. After crying about it I decided to do everything I could to control my diabetes and not let my diabetes control me. I LOVED riding my motorcycle and I was not going to let anything or anyone keep me from it. And this was were it all started for me.
What were the biggest hurdles you had to overcome to be where you are today?
For me the biggest hurdle always have been and still is to face my self image and reflection. I look in the mirror and see the old same 330 lbs self even though I have lost 159 lbs/72 kg. Sadly, mental health and self body image isn’t talked about often when you meet your weight loss goal. It’s often perceived that once you lose the weight. “That’s it; I won. Done!” It’s not, there’s the mental battle that is faced daily.
In which way did Twinbody help you on your journey?
It helped me stay accountable. At first I was hesitant about posting my personal true stats. But after realizing that everyone on Twinbody is there for the same reason as I was, I started posting it. There really isn’t room for judgment and everyone is so supportive. Again, it helps me keep true to myself and practice with what I preached. I get messages from others saying how I inspire them and they look up to me. Receiving THOSE type of messages is what kept and still keeps me going.
What would your best advice be to someone who just started their journey and who are facing the same hurdles as you did?
Find your why. Why you want to change your life. And I’m not referring to the generic answer “for my kids/ family.” Believe it or not, there is a deeper reason and meaning behind that first response. You might have to do some soul searching and once you uncover your true WHY that becomes your FIRE. When you want to give up, you need to refocus on the WHY. That is what keeps you going.
