Do you remember the first day when you decided to begin your weight loss journey?
I believe it was August 7th or 8th of 2017. That is the day where my official health and weight loss journey began. I have tried to lose weight many times throughout my life and I’ve always failed. I also struggled with bulimia.
Going back in time for quick back story. I ended up losing weight in high school by accident when I went to summer camp, I went down to 180 lb (SW250). When I realized how much weight I lost I ended up becoming bulimic in fear of gaining all the weight back again. I’ve tried to stop being bulimic twice in my life. The first time after high school in which I ended up getting back to 250 lb. The second time I tried I ended up getting to around 294 lb. I think I was around 23 or 24 years old at that time. I promised myself I would never get over 250 lb so I was very disappointed. But I also got to 294 lb and at this point I promised myself that I would never make it to 300 lb. On August 7th or 8th in 2017 I had made it to 308 lb! I remember crying. I wanted to kill myself and decided to take what little savings I had and tried to get liposuction. I stayed up all night looking into it and realized that liposuction isn’t actually made for bigger people. But I decided something had to be done. I ended up just taking a few hundred dollars from my saving and getting items needed to work out in and to get a gym membership. From there my journey started, but it was tough and I ended up falling off a bit in September and slowly fell off more throughout the next couple of months. In December I was going to cancel my gym membership all together and just give up.
I feel like December was the real date my journey began for real, or the second awakening we can call it. I remember my bulimia came back and I was sitting up late one night crying and told myself I didn’t want to do this anymore. I realized I needed help and I didn’t want to keep it to myself anymore. It was 2 or 3 a.m. and I woke my mother up in tears to tell her everything. The next morning I also told my best friend. I felt so much better knowing I had someone in my corner to help me to hold me accountable. From then my journey truly began and I did everything I could to change my life and to be healthier.
What were the biggest hurdles you had to overcome to be where you are today?
Weight loss and making a lifestyle change is all in the mindset. All of us want this but most of us aren’t able to achieve it and it’s because we don’t have the right mindset we want it but we’re not willing to do what it takes. Changing my mindset was one of the biggest hurdles which is why I almost fell off completely when I first started it. Which is why it was so hard for me to get over my bulimia because it’s also mindset. I also had a couple of friends who tried to sabotage it for me. I don’t have the best discipline and I know this so I try not to put myself in bad situations. If I know I shouldn’t be eating that I don’t put myself in that situation. And I had a few friends who kept trying to put me in those situations. And because I didn’t have the best mindset or the best discipline they succeeded.
In which way did Twinbody help you on your journey?
I remember being on Instagram one day and one of the weight loss Instagrammers I follow posted a post with three apps that anyone who’s trying to lose weight or change their lifestyle should follow. One of the recommendations was Twinbody. When I download the Twinbody app and started using it I was really grateful. Because I realized something crucial this time around. The reason I was able to succeed this time as opposed to the others is because I had the support needed. This time I told my mother and my best friend and I needed the help and Twinbody further helped me in this journey. In the beginning it was so nice to have a lot of people who could relate to me (and I could relate to them) who helped to motivate and inspire me. It was so nice to have that extra support. I love to getting on Twinbody and post motivational quotes hoping I was helping someone like they were helping me. Sometimes it can be very uncomfortable for us to share with people we know and some of us don’t have people we can depend on. Even though everyone on Twinbody is a stranger I feel so comfortable with them like they’re not strangers but just one big happy family who’s here to love and support you with no judgement.
What would your best advice be to someone who just started their journey and who are facing the same hurdles as you did?
To take it slow one day at a time, don’t focus on big goals or your overall goals because that can be too much. Focus on the little things, I made weekly goals, I wanted to lose 1 or 2 pounds in a week and that’s much easier to do instead of focusing on hundreds of pounds I was trying to lose to reach my overall goal. Work on changing your mindset of how you view things. Surround yourself with like-minded people. I have a separate Instagram account where I follow healthy lifestyles and weight loss vloggers. I also have a separate YouTube channel for health and fitness and I love watching other people’s journeys. It’s so motivational whenever I’m feeling down I like to go on my Instagram, YouTube, or Twinbody. It’s so motivational and inspirational to see others succeeding on their journey and wishing you well, it makes you want to do the same. Try to surround yourself with good people and good vibes.
